The area offers numerous possibilities for running from the valley to the mountain. Each weekend in summer you will find each village fair holding its own race. This all takes place in a very friendly family atmosphere.
A well known challenge is the Le Challenge d'Ossau which consists of 4 races between May and August. You can participate in some of the courses only but to be classified in the challenge, you need to run the 4 events. The cost is €45 for the challenge or €10 per race except the Aubisque at €15.
You can run some of the races or the whole challenge where you have a global result over your four races. Prizes here come from local shops and vary from wine, ham, cheese, and foie-gras to mountain bikes or a weekend in a Spa resort. There are also some random prizes with a lottery based on your race number. All prices are donated by local businesses.
Skiing in the Pyrenees is not as crowded as the Alps and generally cheaper. Traditionally the Pyrenees resorts have been visited more by Spanish customers but in recent years more English families are discovering the local resorts. Our chalet is 30 minutes away from the ski stations of Gourette and Artouste where you can practice downhill ski.
Gourette on the way to the Col de l'Aubisque has recently increased its available number of ski pistes

Artouste on the way to the Col du Pourtalet and Spain.
If you wish to try another station during your stay, the ski station of Arette/la Pierre st. Martin is not too far away. If the weather conditions allow it, through the Col du Pourtalet, there is also easy access to a day's skiing at the Spanish slopes of Formigal. Back to top / Back to winter sport
In La Pierre de St. Martin, you will find 18 runs (23km), 11 ski-lifts, 5 of which are chairlifts. www.lapierrestmartin.com/pyrenees Back to top / Back to winter sport
Located 2 km before the ski resort, the Braca forest is an ideal place for cross country skiing and snowshoeing with its hilly landscape, sunny forest and clearings. Back to top / Back to winter sport

Winter Triathlon - Pau - March (run, bike, cross country ski) This is quite a different sort of triathlon where the weather conditions, being in March, allow you to run and cycle normally but still benefit from the snow once you reach the mountains. So if you wish to stretch your safety boundaries why not come and enjoy this new challenge while at the same time preparing yourself before you start the triathlon season? Within the chalet, we have a foot table, pool table, dart board, Badminton set, cross trainer, rowing machine, 12ft round pool, choice of DVDs and various board games (such as Monopoly). There is so much to do that we never manage to do all we want when coming on holidays ourselves! You can enjoy a wide choice of historical visits, gastronomy, wine tasting, bird watching, local spas, donkey walks and local crafts if you do not choose the "sporty road". Experience the traditional French markets with locally grown products (Tuesdays - Nave- Oloron-Ste-Marie, Saturdays - Laruns) or go to Spain for Sunday lunch, shop at the border shops and back within a day!
